Beginning Wheel Throwing (Clay Lab)

Be introduced to the world of wheel-thrown ceramics with this comprehensive seven-week class that meets on Thursdays from 1:45 pm to 4:15 pm. This class is tailored to first-time students who have little to no prior experience working with clay. Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to make cups, bowls, mugs, and small vases. We will learn how to trim our work, add handles, and utilize a handful of decoration techniques from carving to glazing.

Additionally, students will have access to open studio hours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, providing a total of 84 extra hours for independent work outside of class.*All Students using lab hours must clean up and  leave Clay Lab by 4pm when the building closes to the public.

Participants will also learn skills such as reclaiming and wedging clay, along with proper artwork storage. Emphasizing repetition of action, this class aims to create an understanding of how to throw on the pottery wheel.

 *This course can be repeated as needed to refine skills.

 A 25-pound bag of clay, glazes and kiln firings are included in the course. Attempt to utilize open studio hours to continue to practice your skills.

No previous art experience is required. for adults 16+ Forget the hassle of hunting down materials – we've got you covered! Class will have use of Water Street House markers and paper. 

If you want to purchase your own markers to keep after class. Please bring to the first session:

Late Summer Veggie & Fruit Watercolor (North Classroom)

Step into the vibrant world of late summer bounty with our exclusive Late Summer Veggie & Fruit Festival in Watercolor class!

This class will focus on painting the delicious fruits & veggies of summer. Students will capture the essence of a veggie garden, orchard or farmers market. Our artistic focus will center around a special basket brimming with nature's treasures, ready to be sketched and painted with your personal flair.

August afternoons beckon as we gather amidst the colorful splendor of the season, this two week class is on schedule for Thursday afternoons 3pm to 5pm. Artists of all levels are welcome, with beginners especially encouraged to join in on the fun!

Are you eager to hone your watercolor skills or perhaps explore the enchanting realm of watercolor painting for the first time? If the answer is a resounding "yes," then this class is tailor-made for you!

Throughout this two-session experience, your instructor will guide your discovery  into the fundamental techniques of watercolor painting. This class will cover the art of perspective, master the intricacies of color mixing, explore the interplay of positive and negative space, and harness the transformative power of light within your compositions.

Please bring the following essentials to your first class:

  • Sketchbook (Your choice of size)
  • HB graphite pencil(s)
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Roll of masking tape
  • Watercolor Pad 9 X 12 inch (140 lb cold press paper)
  • 3 Brushes (Small & Medium round, & larger)

Handbuilding (Clay Lab)

Be introduced to hand-building techniques to create functional and sculptural work. With this comprehensive seven-week class meets on Thursdays from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm.

This class is tailored to first-time students who have little to no prior experience working with clay. Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to make cups, bowls, mugs, vases, lidded jars, planters, plates, and small containers. You will learn how to add handles, add feet, and utilize a handful of decoration techniques from carving to glazing.

Additionally, students will have access to open studio hours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, providing a total of 84 extra hours for independent work outside of class.

Participants will also learn skills such as reclaiming and wedging clay, along with proper artwork storage. Emphasizing repetition of action, this class aims to create an understanding of the proper use of slab rollers, extruders, and hand tools.

This course can be repeated as needed.

Beginning Wheel Throwing Part II(Clay Lab)

Calendar Aug 8, 2024 at 7:15 pm, runs for 7 weeks

This course is recommended for students who have taken a beginning wheel-throwing class. This class will meet Thursdays from 7:15 pm to 9:45 pm.  Participants will continue to build their skills by throwing new forms to create different types of shaped bowls, mugs, cups, and vases. They will learn how to center larger 3+ lbs. balls to make 6”-8” tall containers, Mishima carving techniques, slip texture, and a little manipulation of forms. In addition to dunking and brushing glazes, marbling, and blending glazes will be demonstrated for more elaborate finishes.

Throughout the class, students are eligible to use open studio hours Fri/Sat/Sun, 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm. A total of 84 extra hours for you to create work out of class time.

This course can be repeated as needed.

Figure Drawing Workshop in the Main Gallery (14+)

Would you like to have time to develop new artwork ideas and practice your drawing skills with a live costumed dancer?

Join Water Street Studios for this special drawing session in the main gallery. In this session artists of different skill levels can practice their figure drawing skills with a live costumed dancer. The live costumed dancer will pose from short to long poses over the course of 45 minutes. Class will be in the main gallery with floor easels, and horses available. Please come at 12:45pm to set up your art materials and work area. Dancer will begin promptly at 1 pm.

Bring your own art supplies and paper. Dry art materials allowed, such as charcoal, pencils, pastels, conte crayon etc. 

Typically, a class will begin with a series of quick 'gesture drawings' These are poses tend toward being dramatic and action oriented. Capturing a moment frozen in time for students to draw. Following the gesture drawing sketches, the model will hold longer poses for the remainder of the figure drawing practice session. 

Dancer Model, Danielle Wilson, will be clothed and in an interesting costume. Students must be 14+ to register. Danielle has performed with Chicago Dance Crash, Curmudgeon group, Nomi Dance Chicago, and more!

*Direct drawing instructions are not provided. This is an open studio session for artists to practice drawing the human figure.
