Make your own Summer Stuffie - One day workshop(North Classroom)(Ages 7 - 11)

This is a special Summer stuffie workshop!

This class will teach students how to make their own unique artistic  stuffie by learning to hand sew monster and stuffed animal toys! Students will explore their own creativity and imagination in this two hour workshop. This is a great class for students of 7 - 11, as it requires both creativity and fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and problem solving.  

  • Students will turn their own 2-D drawings into 3 -D stuffies.
  • Students will learn basic sewing skills, learn how to hand sew!

Students will be guided to create their own one of a kind stuffed animal and leave with new art skills.  This will be a fun two hour workshop for beginners. 

*All materials are included. Class can be repeated to build skills. Sewing safety skills will be practiced at all times.

Introduction to Color Pencil Drawing( North Classroom)*new class

This class is a five week comprehensive introduction to colored pencil drawing techniques. Students will learn techniques for drawing using colored pencil, to achieve beautiful painterly effects. Students will leave class with new colored pencil drawing skills and finished works of art. For 16+

Curriculum will include:

  • How to use different drawing strokes to achieve results.
  • How to effectively layer colors for painterly techniques
  • How to use Color Theory to increase the drama of your artwork.
  • and more! 

Starting with an underlaying drawing, the blending of layers of color will give a painterly quality to the drawings. Students will learn about additional tools that will help achieve the desired effects to their drawing. Students will start with a tutorial lesson, then students will work on their own drawings with the guidance of the instructor.

Students should bring references and ideas for drawings they would like to create.

*If a repeat session is offered, it could be ongoing for students to continue their projects and refine their drawing skills.

What you will need to purchase before class:

  • 24 color Prismacolor Premier Pencil
  • Crescent cold press illustration board   (2 - 3 8 x 10 sheets) 
  •  9”x12” tracing paper pad
  • 2B pencil
  • 12” aluminum non-slip ruler (recommended)
  • Roll of scotch magic tape
  • Prisma color pencil sharpener (recommended)
  • Kneaded eraser

Mid Summer 'Escapes' Watercolor (North Classroom)

We will cover Landscapes,  which include beach or lake scenes, sunny meadow scapes, river or forest inspired scenes....this watercolor class is ideal for anyone who enjoys watercolor painting inspired by NATURE.

 This class will include understanding balance and perspective, color mixing and applying layers & glazes for a dynamic art composition.  The use of warm and cool colors will also be introduced . Reference material is encouraged,  however the instructor will supply a variety of subject material.

Whether you're a seasoned artist or just beginning to explore your creative talents, all skill levels are warmly welcomed to join.  Prepare to embark on an unforgettable artistic adventure surrounded by fellow nature enthusiasts.

Students will leave with new skills to continue to paint after class! 

Please bring the following essentials to your first class:

  • Sketchbook (Your choice of size)
  • HB graphite pencil

Figure Drawing Workshop in the Main Gallery (14+)

Would you like to have time to develop new artwork ideas and practice your drawing skills with a live costumed dancer?

Join Water Street Studios for this special drawing session in the main gallery. In this session artists of different skill levels can practice their figure drawing skills with a live costumed dancer. The live costumed dancer will pose from short to long poses over the course of 45 minutes. Class will be in the main gallery with floor easels, and horses available. Please come at 12:45pm to set up your art materials and work area. Dancer will begin promptly at 1 pm.

Bring your own art supplies and paper. Dry art materials allowed, such as charcoal, pencils, pastels, conte crayon etc. 

Typically, a class will begin with a series of quick 'gesture drawings' These are poses tend toward being dramatic and action oriented. Capturing a moment frozen in time for students to draw. Following the gesture drawing sketches, the model will hold longer poses for the remainder of the figure drawing practice session. 

Dancer Model, Danielle Wilson, will be clothed and in an interesting costume. Students must be 14+ to register. Danielle has performed with Chicago Dance Crash, Curmudgeon group, Nomi Dance Chicago, and more!

*Direct drawing instructions are not provided. This is an open studio session for artists to practice drawing the human figure.

Introduction to Oil Painting Portraiture (For Teens 14 +) (3 - D Classroom)

Learn to paint with oils in this five session class.  This class guides students through the process of painting a portrait using oil paint. This session class will meet Monday July 29th, Wednesday July 31st, Friday August 1st, Monday August 5 and finish Wednesday August 7th. 

Students will go over the basics of oil painting and learn about color mixing, lean vs. fat, value (lights and darks), creating washes, underpainting, and grisaille. Both anatomy, and proportions will be discussed and practiced using oil paints. Students will create their own portrait paintings over the course of this 5-week class.

What you will need to bring to class on first day:

  • Oil Paints (Basic Set of colors): Burnt Umber, Titanium White, Ivory Black, Naples Yellow, Cadmium Red, Phthalo Blue, Cadmium Yellow, Sap Green, Alizarin Crimson.
  •  A Selection of brushes: #1/ #3/ #5 round brushes, #4 filbert brush, and 3/8” flat brush or similar; Turpentine, Linseed oil, paper palettes, a palette knife, small mason jar with Lid (for turpentine), Cotton Rags (2), brush cleaner(optional) and a bag or box to carry your supplies in.
  • 3 Canvases 11" x 14" or larger. 

* Supplies are readily available from stores such as Amazon, Dick Blick and Michaels. 

Class can be repeated to refine and build skills.

Introduction to Metalsmithing & Jewelry Making (3 - D Lab)

In this 7-week class for beginners you will be introduced to the skills of traditional metalsmithing and jewelry making.

Get a comprehensive introduction to the use of hand tools to practice fundamentals such as sawing, filing, forming, textures, cold connections and surface finishing using metals such as copper, brass, and bronze.

Videos and visuals are used to expand your knowledge of both design and techniques.

Beginning Wheel Throwing (Clay Lab)

Be introduced to the world of wheel-thrown ceramics with this comprehensive seven-week class that meets on Tuesdays from 1:45 pm to 4:15 pm. This class is tailored to first-time students who have little to no prior experience working with clay. Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to make cups, bowls, mugs, and small vases. We will learn how to trim our work, add handles, and utilize a handful of decoration techniques from carving to glazing.

Additionally, students will have access to open studio hours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, providing a total of 84 extra hours for independent work outside of class.*All Students using lab hours must clean up and  leave Clay Lab by 4pm when the building closes to the public.

Participants will also learn skills such as reclaiming and wedging clay, along with proper artwork storage. Emphasizing repetition of action, this class aims to create an understanding of how to throw on the pottery wheel.

 *This course can be repeated as needed to refine skills.

 A 25-pound bag of clay, glazes and kiln firings are included in the course. Attempt to utilize open studio hours to continue to practice your skills.
