Intro to Drawing on Scratchboard for Ages 16+(North Classroom)
with Jill Adzia
Students will be introduced to the dramatic and beautiful art of Scratchboard in this introduction to scratchboard class with WSS teacher Jill Adzia! Jill is a scratchboard expert who loves to introduce beginners to this beautiful and unique art!
What is scratchboard art? Have you ever scratched your name into a surface? If so, you are well on your way to understanding the beautiful art of scratchboard! Working on a dark background which creates beautiful dramatic art, beginner students will learn this art of 'engraving', this is a drawing process where an image is incised, cut or carved into a surface with lines, marks, and strokes.
Students will learn the materials and methods used when drawing (engraving) into and 'inked' clay board or 'prepared scratchboard.' Each student will then create a beautiful and one-of-a-kind art piece using tools that enforce the black and white design! Optional permanent markers or colored ink can be added for dramatic effect.
The possibilities are so versatile and fun!
For ages 16+ through Adults (Some art class experience helpful but not required.)
Beginners scratchboard kit included in class registration fee.(valued at approximately $30.00) Scratchboard kit includes: Scratchboard pad, Xacto knife, Sketchbook, Masking Tape, Transfer Paper, Pencils and Erasers, Tote bag to carry these art materials.
Introduction to Pen and Ink Drawing for 16+(South Classroom)
with Kelley Cappell
Accomplished illustrator Kelley Cappell leads this beginner level course on pen and ink line drawing. Begin with basic technique exercises including shading and line variation with different size pens. Then, apply what you’ve learned by working on a drawing of your choice. By the end of the course, you will have a finished pen and ink drawing to take home.
Designed for ages 16 and above. Course #DRW101.322.03. Drawing experience is helpful, but not necessary to benefit from this course.
What you will need for the course:
- Set of 10 (assorted size) black micron pens
- 11”x14”mixed media, marker, or pen & ink pad. Must mention suitability for ink.
Colored Pencil Outdoor Workshop(For 14+)
with Phillip Schorn
Celebrate Summer this year and join Phil Schorn for this exciting outdoor Plein air workshop by the beautiful Fox River in Batavia at the Batavia Riverwalk!
This special half-day workshop with artist Phillip Schorn is an excellent opportunity to expand your skill with colored pencil.
During the initial part of the workshop, Phillip will demonstrate various color pencil techniques. You’ll work on a couple of different renderings during the workshop.

This workshop is designed for those with some experience with colored pencil, age 14 and above.

Color Pencil Techniques on Black (South Classroom)

Join WSS resident artist Lisa Youngdahl explore color pencil on black! This may be your introduction to colored pencil or, if you have already used colored pencil, there are different techniques to learn for drawing on black. The vivid color against black adds “extra punch” to your drawing!
Students will learn both basic colored pencil techniques and adapting these techniques to work on black board. The vivid color against a black board will add extra drama to your artwork! Starting with an underlaying drawing, the blending of layers of color will give a painterly quality to the drawings. Students will learn about additional tools that will help achieve the desired effects to their drawing. We will start with a tutorial lesson, then students will work on their own drawings with the guidance of the instructor. Students should bring references and ideas for drawings they would like to create. Students will need to provide their own set of 24 color Prismacolor Premier Pencils. These are available at local art supply stores and Amazon.
*If a repeat session is offered, it could be ongoing for students to continue their projects.

What you will need:
- 24 color Prismacolor Premier Pencils
- Canson Black Drawing Board, 16”x20” - cut into four 8”x10” boards
- 9”x12” tracing paper pad
- 2H pencil
- 12” aluminum non-slip ruler (recommended)
- Roll of scotch tape
- Prisma color pencil sharpener (recommended)
- Kneaded eraser

Join WSS art instructor, Matt Fitzpatrick, for this FUN summertime workshop for ages 11 + (for beginners)
Students will learn all the basics in the art of creating characters in this two week four session class! Class will meet August 1st, 3rd, 8th, & 10th.
Students will learn how to create strong defined characters of their own to use in their own art, projects and stories.
