Beginning Wheel Throwing (Clay Lab)

Calendar Jun 6, 2022 at 3 pm, runs for 4 weeks

This four-week course will meet Mondays and Wednesdays for 2.5 hours. This beginning wheel throwing course introduces the fundamental skills needed to create wheel thrown forms: cups, bowls, small vase forms. Trimming, carving, and adding handles are introduced to create more unique and individualized pieces. 

Participants will learn how to wedge clay, safely store artwork, and glaze their pieces by dunking and brushing. This class will focus on quantity and repetition of practice to build the skill for quality.                    

This course can be repeated as needed.

* Note: Designed for ages 16 and above. A 25-pound bag of clay, glazes and kiln firings are included in the course. During the duration of the class, our open studio hours will provide the opportunity for 27 extra hours a week to come in and work on your projects.

Ceramics for Young Artists(Ages 12- 16) (Clay Lab)

This four-week course will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays for 2.5 hours. Students will concentrate on the pottery wheel creating bowls, cylinders, and bottle forms. They will learn decoration and textures to design their forms and finish them with trimming a foot and adding handles. For handbuilding they will create slab-built mugs, bowls, plates, and cylinders. Different glazing techniques will be demonstrated to glaze their work to bring home a collection of creations at the end of this course.

This course can be repeated as needed.

*Note: Designed for ages 12-16. A 25-pound bag of clay, glazes and kiln firings are included in the course.

Calendar Jul 11, 2022 at 3 pm, runs for 4 weeks

This four-week course will meet Mondays and Wednesdays for 2.5 hours. This course is recommended for students who have the basics skills of wheel throwing, storing pieces from week to week, trimming and glazing. Participants will continue to build their skills by throwing new forms to create different shaped bowls, mugs, cups, and vases. They will learn how to center larger 3+ lbs. balls to make 6”-8” tall containers, Mishima carving techniques, slip texture, and a little manipulation of forms. In addition to dunking and brushing glazes, marbling, and blending glazes will be demonstrated for more elaborate finishes.  

Part 2 can be repeated as needed.
