Discovering Abstract Art (North Classroom)

Join WSS instructor, Chris Beaty will demonstrate drawing and painting intuitively and review the work of several abstract painters designed to help you understand the core concepts behind non-representational painting (painting without recognizable images).

During the 6 week course, you’ll be encouraged to work quickly and to try new things as a way to experience creative breakthroughs. You'll work on numerous (up to 20) small sketches and three or four paintings. No experience necessary.

This course is designed for anyone age 16 and above who:

  • Wants to explore nonrepresentational painting.
  • Wants to strengthen and develop their own voice as a painter.
  • Is interested in taking risks with their painting.
  • Wants to have more confidence in their own way of painting

Introduction to Oil Painting (North Classroom)

Learn to paint with oils in this six-week class with Chris Beaty!  While the focus will be on developing your own unique style and creativity, the course also covers basic terms, materials, and techniques. Learn concepts such as color theory, perspective, spatial relationships, and composition.

Chris Beaty will demonstrate the fundamentals of oil painting. During the 6 week course, you will learn the tools of the trade along with the basic fundamentals of value, color mixing, composition and paint application. Students will complete three to four paintings. No experience necessary. This course is designed for anyone age 16 and above.

You will also study still life in various painting styles and art movements in the historical context. Demonstrations as well as group and individual critiques are provided throughout the course. Course#PNT105.322.01

What you will need:

Paint: titanium white, ultramarine blue, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, cadmium yellow, ivory black and yellow ochre .

Misc. Supplies: #1/ #3/ #5 round brushes, #4 filbert brush, and 3/8” flat brush; Liquin Original medium; bar of ivory soap and plastic soap container, paper palette, diamond shaped palette knife, old kitchen towel (approx. 12” x 18”), clean baby food jar and lid.

Acrylic Portrait Painting for Teens (Ages 13 -18) South Classroom

Calendar Jun 4, 2022 at 3:30 pm, runs for 6 weeks

This six week course, led by artist Juliana Gabriel, will introduce you to the art of portraiture and help you to create three finished compositions! Students will practice facial proportion first in graphite, then grayscale acrylic, and finally color acrylic. Juliana will teach you her own painting process, as well as help you define your own artistic style. Some previous experience with acrylic painting is required.

Week 1: Blind continuous contour drawing, facial proportions in graphite 

Week 2: Grayscale portrait, small project

Week 3: Color self portrait using my process, small project

Week 4: Portrait learning from other artists styles, small project 

Week 5: Portrait in their own style, large project

Week 6: Finishing their large project

This class is for ages 12-18  students should have some acrylic/art experience, but new to portraits

What students will need to bring to first class:

  • Palette knife (optional: WSS studio palette knifes available.)
  • Palette (optional: WSS studio palette available)
  • 8.5 x 11 Sketchbook or larger
  • 2B pencil
  • 3 9x12/11x14 primed canvas 
  • Basic Set of Acrylic Paint (optional: WSS studio acrylic paint available)

This FUN one night workshop led by artist Kelley Cappell will introduce you to the beautiful art of acrylic 'pour' painting and help you to create finished compositions!

Acrylic pour painting is a technique used to create paintings with flowing abstract patterns. The effect is created by combining acrylic paint with a liquid medium. This mixture is then “poured” onto a surface and spread around by means of tilting the surface or manually manipulating the paint.

The results are FUN and abstract!

What students will need for the course:

  • Four 11" x 14" primed canvas panels. 
  • WSS will provide instruction and other materials.

Intro to Watercolor Painting for Adults (18+)(North Classroom)

Join WSS artist Jill Adzia for a beginner’s level watercolor painting class this Summer! (For 18 +)

This summer watercolor class is for anyone interested in learning the step by step basics of Watercolor painting.

Jill will lead you through an easy to learn "Still Life" composition.... first practicing  color mixing, color washes, "wet on wet", "wet on dry"exercises.  Students will  learn and explore using  highlights, lowlights, perspective and the use of shadows during  the class lessons. 

Each week will be another adventure into the beautiful world of Watercolor painting!

Please purchase basic watercolor supplies needed for first class:

  • Sketchbook (Your choice of size)
  • 2B Pencil
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Roll of masking tape
  • Watercolor Pad 9 X 12 inch
  • Basic Water Color paint set (WSS will provide or purchase your own to keep.)

This summer WSS would like to invite you to take art trip mini break with Water Street Studios and virtually go to the beautiful Grand Canyon State, Arizona! 

This class will include a two-hour art making experience plus one drink included and a sampling of southwestern snacks! Arizona is an amazing state with beautiful landscape and fun food! One beverage included, choice of a  Arizona Prickly Pear Margarita, or glass of Arizona Wine or nonalcoholic drink! The Arizona wine region is currently booming and producing award winning wines, we will feature a selection of these award-winning wines! 

Join this class and travel through the USA with Art! Be inspired by the rich beauty of the warm colors of Arizona desert and escape with Water Street Studio's artist, Jill Adzia on this amazing art vacation!  In this workshop you’ll complete your own unique drawing with watercolor pencil and watercolor brush!
