$120

with Carly Palmer

Calendar Aug 17, 2022 at 4 pm, runs for 4 weeks

Join WSS this August for back to school and back to creativity classes! Join this creative collage workshop that develops both creativity and introduces art history to students!

Come join School of Art Instructor Carly Palmer for a unique creative collage workshop four (4) part series for children that pairs art making, art history, and literacy! In each 2 hour workshop, children will be invited to explore their own unique imaginations and curiosity through process art. Process Art is art that is child-directed, choice-driven, and celebrates the experience of discovery. In process art, the final product is always unique and the focus lies in the creation of the work, not the outcome. This workshop is geared towards 1st-4th Grade aged children.

Week One: We will be creating paper collages inspired by Henri Matisse’s work. At the beginning of the workshop, we will be reading the book “Henri’s Scissors” to introduce students to the theme & art project.

Week Two: We will be creating paper collages inspired by the artistic movement Surrealism (and artists such as Rene Magritte & Salvador Dali) and encouraging students to let their imaginations run wild! At the beginning of the workshop, we will be reading the book “Remarkable Animals” to introduce students to the theme & art project.

Week Three: We will be creating tissue paper collages collages inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s floral paintings. At the beginning of the workshop, we will be reading the book “Plants Can’t Still” to introduce students to the theme & art project.

Week Four: We will be creating paper self-portrait collages inspired by Pablo Picasso’s work. At the beginning of the workshop, we will be reading the book “We’re All Works of Art” to introduce students to the theme & art project.

*Special Note: Process art is developmentally appropriate for young children because it meets them where they are as sensory explorers. Children will be using glue sticks, safety scissors, and washi tape to put together their collages. All materials will be provided and students will be able to choose & experiment with a variety of materials. The workshop is adaptable to each child’s individual needs.
