Woodland Watercolor Painting - Spring wildflowers (North Classroom)

Enjoy nature at its best this Spring and celebrate the season with this introduction to watercolor class focused on using the spring woodland as subject matter, this class is perfect for beginners to intermediate students. 

In this nature study class students will learn to identify,  sketch then watercolor local Spring wildflowers found in the woodlands of our area. Jill Adzia, Morton Arboretum Nature Artist will lead you on an artistic exploration of these special and unique plants. 

Students will learn a variety of watercolor and watercolor pencil techniques including:

  • Color Mixing
  • Creating Watercolor Washes
  • Understanding positive and negative space
  • Understanding composition

*This watercolor class is for anyone interested in learning the step by step basics of landscape watercolor painting. 

Please purchase basic watercolor supplies needed for first class:

  • Sketchbook (Your choice of size)
  • 2B Pencil

  • Watercolor Pad 9 X 12 inch (cold press)

Paint & Sip Herstory: Flowers Larger than Life Watercolor Painting Workshop - Paint and Sip for 21+ (3 - D Classroom)

Escape & create and for two hours in this watercolor class!

Georgia O’Keeffe was one of the first American artists to practice pure abstraction with work varying between portraits, abstractions and landscapes.  She is well-known for her iconic flower paintings. In 2014, the Georgia O'Keefe Museum sold a floral painting (Jimson Weed/White Flower No.1, painted in 1932) for $44 million dollars at auction setting the record for artwork sold by a female artist. 

In this class we will celebrate the work of Georgia O’Keefe and the natural world as we examine elements and principles in O’Keefe’s work and create original compositions inspired by O’Keeffe’s signature work. Watercolor paints and oil pastels will be used.  Each student will leave class with an original 9 X 12 painting on watercolor paper.

Acrylic Painting (North Classroom)

This five-week course led by artist Kelley Cappell will introduce you to the beauty of acrylic painting and help you to create several finished compositions. A focus on simple subject matter such as florals, landscapes, paint pouring, and still life ensures that you can confidently learn and practice basic acrylic techniques. 

No previous art experience is required. for adults 16+ 

What students will need for the course:

  • Five, 9" x 12" or 11" x 14" primed canvas panels. 
  • Set of student grade acyrilic paint (minimum of red, blue, yellow, black, and white).
  • Brush set (multiple size for painting).

*If a repeat session is offered, it could be ongoing for students to continue their projects and refine skills.

Exploration of Oil Pastels with Mixed Media (North Classroom) *new class

Oil Pastel works well with other media! This course will explore combining oil pastel with watercolor and colored pencils. The course will also explore blending techniques using terpenoid or baby oil.

*Excellent course for anyone who has some experience with oil pastel or completed the Water Street Studios beginner oil pastel workshop.

This is a guided 4 week class that meets two hours a week with experienced art instructor, Joe Guinta.

Students will be introduced to:

  • oil pastels application techniques
  • layering and blending using turpenoid and baby oil.
  • how to create details with color pencil.
  • and how to accent your oil pastel work with watercolor techniques 

Students will leave class with completed projects and the skills to continue creating using beautiful oil pastels!

Art Materials are included in this class, including use of house oil pastels, paper, and drawing tools.

*Class can be repeated to refine and build skills.

Do you want to celebrate spring botanicals and paint your own amazing watercolors?

Join this Class with resident artist, Meaghan Green, and learn how to paint your own watercolor botanicals over 2 weeks!

Beautiful and bright, hand-water colored botanical prints became all the rage in 18th century England. In the wake of the Enlightenment period, artists and explorers carefully studied flora and fauna of all kinds and created detailed and informative sketches of their findings. In this course, we will follow in the footsteps of these inquisitive artists and carefully observe seasonal botanical samples, then create our own hyper realistic water-colored sketches. In addition to sketching and watercolor techniques, students will learn about the rich history of these botanical watercolors and the culture that produced them.

*No previous knowledge of watercolor is required; all skill levels are welcome! for 16+

* Supplies not included in this session. Please bring your own supplies.

Abstract Acrylic 'Pour' Painting Workshop (North Classroom)

This FUN one day workshop led by artist Kelley Cappell will introduce you to the beautiful art of acrylic 'pour' painting and help you to create finished compositions!

Acrylic pour painting is a technique used to create paintings with flowing abstract patterns. The effect is created by combining acrylic paint with a liquid medium. This mixture is then “poured” onto a surface and spread around by means of tilting the surface or manually manipulating the paint.

The results are FUN and abstract! You will complete 4 paintings!

No previous art experience is required. (for 16+)

Included in class registration:

  • Four 11" x 14" primed(painted white) canvases. 
  • WSS will provide instruction and other art materials in registration.
