Watercolor Painting for Beginners - Online

Join artist Kevin Hunter on a journey into the beautiful medium of watercolor. Taught online through instructional videos and live Zoom sessions, beginner students will develop their painting skills through exercises and projects that introduce a variety of watercolor techniques. Course#PNT100.221.01

The course includes an instructional video each week. Also included is a weekly group Zoom session with the instructor for guidance, helpful critique, and/or questions about your work.

What you will need for the course:

  • One Burnt Sienna (Blick # 00319-8040) - One Winsor Violet (Blick # 00319-6740) - One Winsor Newton Cotman BlueBox Set of 12 half pans (Blick # 00337-1109).  
  • One Arches Watercolor Block (very important that you purchase the block) - cold press, 9”x12”, 20 sheets (Blick item #10020-1003)
  • Three Blick Master Stroke Golden Taklon Watercolor Brushes: (1) one inch flat (Blick item #09017-1001), (2) No. 10 round (Blick item #09015-1010), (3) Script Liner Size 2 (Blick item #09014-1002)

Supplies are available through many online outlets including Dick Blick, Amazon, or Michael’s.

Acrylic Painting for Beginners - Online

Calendar Jan 25, 2021 at 7 pm, runs for 5 weeks

Discover the fundamentals of acrylic painting and explore various approaches to handling this versatile medium. Techniques in building washes, layered glazes, and other methods will be demonstrated in this online course taught by Wisconsin artist Esteen Lauri Feldshriber.

You’ll develop and refine skills to create the effects of light and color in still life and nature painting. Individual expression and experimentation will be encouraged with direct observation of subject matter either the instructor provides or guides the student to document at home.

The course includes several instructional videos each week. Zoom sessions begin with discussion of topics covered in the videos and includes guidance and helpful critique about your work. Students should also plan to paint along with the instructor during each Zoom session.

The course runs Jan. 25 - Feb. 22 (final Zoom session). Zoom sessions are every Monday, 7-8:30 p.m.. Links to access instructional videos,  Zoom sessions, and supply list are sent through email prior to the course start date.

Acrylic Painting for Beginners

This six-week course led by artist Kelley Cappell will introduce you to the beauty of acrylic painting while you create several finished compositions. A focus on simple subject matter such as florals, landscapes, and still life ensures that you can confidently learn and practice basic acrylic techniques. No previous art experience is required. Note: Designed for ages 14 and above. All supplies are provided. 9"x12" canvases will be provided. Students may bring in larger canvases if desired. 

For your safety, this workshop is limited to five (5) participants. We follow social distancing and masks are required.

Watercolor Painting for Young Artists (age 12-16)

In this new course for young artists age, led by Annelise Pollard, you will learn the fundamentals of watercolor painting. Using still-life as the subject matter, gain a basic understanding of watercolor by practicing brush techniques, layering, and washes. By the end of the course, you will have created a few finished pieces that will prepare you for continued exploration in watercolor. No previous experience required. Course#  PNT106.221.01

What you will need for the course:

  • Cretacolor Aqua Brique Set
  • Strathmore 300 Series Tape Bound Watercolor Pad - 9'' x 12'', Cold Press, Tape bound (12 sheets)
  • Strathmore 400 Series Watercolor Paper - 22'' x 30'', Single Sheet

A brush set will be provided. For safety, enrollment is limited and masks are required.

 

Introduction to Oil Painting

Learn and build upon the fundamental skills you need to express yourself in the oil paint medium in this new introductory class with instructor Christine Rider.

Learn how to prepare your painting surface and begin to understand the steps for developing an oil painting. Topics will include layering processes, brushwork, palette knife use, and color mixing.  An overview of the elements and principals of design will help to give a foundation to the development of your compositions. Sessions include demos, discussion, presentations of other artists’ paintings, and individual guidance by the instructor. Course #PNT105

Introduction to Oil Painting

Calendar Mar 4, 2021 at 6:30 pm, runs for 7 weeks

Learn to paint with oils in this seven-week class with Aimee Maher BFA! While the focus will be on developing your own unique style and creativity, the course also covers basic terms, materials, and techniques. Learn concepts such as color theory, perspective, spatial relationships, and composition.

You will also study still life in various painting styles and art movements in the historical context. Demonstrations as well as group and individual critiques are provided throughout the course. Course#PNT105.221.02

What you will need:

Paint: titanium white, ultramarine blue, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, cadmium yellow.

Misc. Supplies: #1/ #3/ #5 round brushes, #4 filbert brush, and 3/8” flat brush; linseed oil; bar of ivory soap and plastic soap container, plastic palette or case with lid, diamond shaped palette knife, old kitchen towel (approx. 12” x 18”), clean baby food jar and lid.

Oil Painting for Beginners w/Kevin Hunter - Online

Explore the enchanting world of oil painting in my new online course from Water Street Studio’s School of Art online.

We will cover a range of topics and techniques that I have developed in my 30 plus years of working in oils. When you complete this course, you will be well versed in:

  • How to make a game plan for every piece that is in accord with techniques developed in the Renaissance.
  • How to mix a huge array of colors from a very small selection (palette) of key colors.
  • How to simplify your subject matter into tonal masses. How to create an under painting.
  • How to create darks that breathe and are lively. How to use and blend darks and lights so that your objects are three dimensional.
  • How to mix effective flesh tones.
  • Understanding the components of an effective composition.

We will begin the course with classic color mixing exercises and creating color charts. From there, you will learn to paint simple geometric objects that appear realistic and three dimensional. Along the way, you will discover various brush techniques and gain an understanding what brushes to use when.

In the last few sessions, apply your knowledge to create a still life, a landscape, and a portrait.

The online format has been a wonderful experience for every course I’ve taught. I am certain that you will really develop your skills during our time together!

Each week, I will provide lesson videos that introduce and demonstrate that week's goals. You will have seven days to complete the work of each lesson in preparation for a one hour Zoom meeting in which we show and discuss what has been done. The course runs March 11 - April 22 (final Zoom session). The first Zoom session is March 18 at 7 p.m.
