Getting Started with Colored Pencil - Online Course

Explore the beauty of drawing with colored pencils in this online course for beginners. Learn everything you need to get started - types of paper, pencils, how to put the color down, layering, and blending. Each session will include a review and demonstration of new techniques. Course#DRW102.220.02

This live Zoom course meets for 90 minutes, 6:30-8 p.m. for four (4) weeks, March 3-24. A recording of each session will be available for you to view if you are unable to attend a live session. Reference images will be supplied.

It is expected that the student will be able to dedicate time between the sessions.  

What you will need:

  • 48 count Prismacolor softcore pencils
  • One (1) 9”x12”  300 series Strathmore Smooth Bristol Pad
  • One Blick colorless blending pen
  • Pencil sharpener (electric or manual)

Helpful extras….. Smooth surface to draw on, drawing board 1” or 2” clean, soft paintbrush (for use as a drafting brush)

Explore the beauty of drawing with colored pencil on black paper in this online course for beginners and experienced artists alike. Learn everything you need to get started - paper, pencils, how to put the color down, how to draw without seeing lines, layering, and blending.

This live Zoom course meets for 90 minutes, 6:30- 8 p.m. for four (4) weeks, March 4-25. A recording of each session will be available for you to view if you are unable to attend a live session.   • White Graphite Paper (white carbon paper)

Think, draw, and paint abstractly in this new six-session course taught by Christopher Beaty. Explore a variety of techniques with an emphasis on finding what works for you as an artist. Chris will demonstrate drawing and painting intuitively and review the work of several abstract painters designed to help you understand the core concepts behind non-representational painting (painting without recognizable images).

During the course, you’ll be encouraged to work quickly and to try new things as a way to experience breakthroughs. You'll work on numerous (up to 20) small sketches and three or four paintings.

No experience necessary. This course is designed for anyone age 16 and above who:

  • Wants to explore non-representational painting.
  • Wants to strengthen and develop their own voice as a painter.
  • Is interested in taking risks with their painting.
  • Wants to have more confidence in their own way of painting.

Supply information for the course is included in your email confirmation. For safety, enrollment is limited and masks are required.

Drawing for Beginners - Online

Join artist Kevin Hunter for this comprehensive introduction to drawing.

Taught online through instructional videos and live Zoom sessions, you'll develop your skills through exercises and projects using graphite and charcoal to create realistic drawings. Instruction covers line, shape, shadow, perspective, and other key elements of drawing. Course#  DRW100.221.02

The course includes an instructional video each week. Also included is a weekly group Zoom session with the instructor for guidance, helpful critique, and/or questions about your work.

What you will need for the course:

  • A minimum 9”x12” drawing pad
  • One #2 pencil
  • One General’s charcoal pencil (soft)
  • One or two kneaded erasers

Portrait Drawing Workshop

Become confident drawing portraits in this popular four-session workshop designed for students with some drawing experience. 

Working from photographs with graphite and charcoal, use the “sight-size method” to create a realistic, classical portrait. Learn how to plan out a successful portrait drawing and how to avoid common errors.

Demos, handouts, and critiques guide your learning as you complete a self-portrait (or a portrait of a loved one) on toned paper to take home. You’re encouraged to enhance your work by adding meaningful elements to your portrait, such as an object that is important to you (or your subject). Course#DRW103.221.02

What you will need for the workshop:

  1. Nitram Charcoal sticks, HB & H (5-pack)
  2. 1 HB pencil
  3. 1 General’s White Charcoal pencil
  4. 1 Kneaded eraser
  5. 1 Sandpaper block for sharpening charcoal
  6. 1 small lidded container for the charcoal powder
  7. 2 sheets of Canson Mi-Tienes drawing paper, 8.5” x 11" (available in stores as a single sheets) in the color STEEL GREY. If you cannot find this size in store, the bigger sheet can be cut to size.
  8. A sketchbook of your choice.

Copying the Masters - Online

Calendar Mar 31, 2021 at 7 pm, runs for 2 weeks

Is there an artist you admire? Copying the work of one of the Great Masters like Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, or Picasso not only helps you to become a better artist, but is also a powerful way for you to begin to develop your own unique style.

In this new online course, choose one of your favorite artists/works of art and create an exact copy. Choose any drawing from your favorite artist or pick from one chosen by the instructor.

With instructor guidance, you’ll replicate (as much as possible) the drawing with the same materials, paper, and dimensions as the original. After the class, you will have a replica of your favorite piece to hang in your home.

Supplies may vary depending on the artist you choose -the instructor will reach out for questions. These are the basics:

  • One Strathmore Artagain assorted toned sketchbook, 12” x1 8”
  • One General’s Charcoal Pencil set (2B, 4B, 6B, white, and kneaded eraser) OR Nitram Charcoal starter kit (sandpaper block, H stick, HB stick, B stick)
  • One HB pencil
  • Optional: Tombow Dual Brush pen, dark grey

Supplies are available through many online and retail outlets including Dick Blick, Amazon, or Michael’s.

Note: Designed for students age 16 and above with some drawing experience. The course includes two instructional videos and two Zoom sessions with the instructor for guidance, helpful critique, and/or questions about your work. Videos are available beginning March 31. The live Zoom sessions are held April 7 and 14, 7-8:30 p.m.

Watercolor Pencil for Beginners - Online

A recording of each session will be available for you to view if you are unable to attend a live session. It is expected that students will be able to dedicate time between the sessions.
