Getting Started with Colored Pencil - Online Course

Explore the beauty of drawing with colored pencils in this online course for beginners. Learn everything you need to get started - types of paper, pencils, how to put the color down, layering, and blending. Each session will include a review and demonstration of new techniques. Course#DRW102.220.01

This live Zoom course meets for 90 minutes, 3-4:30 p.m. for four (4) weeks, Feb. 2- 23. A recording of each session will be available for you to view if you are unable to attend a live session. Reference images will be supplied.

It is expected that the student will be able to dedicate time between the sessions.  

What you will need:

  • 48 count Prismacolor softcore pencils
  • One (1) 9”x12”  300 series Strathmore Smooth Bristol Pad
  • One Blick colorless blending pen
  • Pencil sharpener (electric or manual)

Helpful extras….. Smooth surface to draw on, drawing board 1” or 2” clean, soft paintbrush (for use as a drafting brush)

Drawing for Young Artists (age 12-16)

Calendar Feb 6, 2021 at 1 pm, runs for 5 weeks

Being able to draw is the basis of any art form. In this new class, young artists will explore their abilities and learn how to plan, compose, and draw a completed still life. Choose to either work from life or from a photograph. Using charcoal pencil on toned paper, focus on developing your fundamental skills while creating a successful piece with full value and correct perspective. Your final piece is sure to be a frame-worthy work of art. Course#  DRW104.221.01

What you will need for this course:

  • One Nitram Charcoal starter kit (sandpaper block, H stick, HB stick, B stick)
  • One kneaded eraser
  • One HB pencil
  • One sketchbook (minimum 9”x12”)

Drawing for Young Artists (age 12-16) - Online

In this new online course, the fundamentals of classical drawing will be introduced using still-life, nature, and other subjects. Young artists will discover methods to connect direct observation with skills to render imagery on paper and core studio concepts will give you the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of art and design with projects that develop and strengthen both traditional and experimental art techniques. Supply list will be emailed upon registration. Supplies are available through many online and retail outlets including Dick Blick, Amazon, or Michael’s.

Video demonstrations of techniques will be provided each week followed by Zoom sessions at the indicated time with the instructor for guidance while you paint. Necessary links and other information will be sent prior to course start date.

Portrait Drawing Workshop

Calendar Feb 24, 2021 at 7 pm, runs for 4 weeks

Many artists stress about drawing the human face. Perhaps you do too? Relieve some of that stress as you experiment and become confident drawing portraits in this new four-session workshop designed for students with some drawing experience. 

Working from photographs with graphite and charcoal, use the “sight-size method” to create a realistic, classical portrait. Learn how to plan out a successful portrait drawing and troubleshoot common errors.

Demos, handouts, and critiques guide your learning as you complete a self-portrait (or a portrait of a loved one) on toned paper to take home. You’re encouraged to enhance your work by adding meaningful elements to your portrait, such as an object that is important to you (or your subject). Course#DRW103.221.01

What you will need for the workshop:

  1. Nitram Charcoal sticks, HB & H (5-pack)
  2. 1 HB pencil
  3. 1 General’s White Charcoal pencil
  4. 1 Kneaded eraser
  5. 1 Sandpaper block for sharpening charcoal
  6. 1 small lidded container for the charcoal powder
  7. 2 sheets of Canson Mi-Tienes drawing paper, 8.5” x 11" (available in stores as a single sheets) in the color STEEL GREY. If you cannot find this size in store, the bigger sheet can be cut to size.
  8. A sketchbook of your choice.

Note: Designed for students age 16 and above with some drawing experience. Students should expect to dedicate time between sessions for practice exercises.

Drawing "Bootcamp"

Anyone can learn to draw! Learn how in this new introductory course offered during the daytime hours.

Observe the elements of design, and investigate line, shape, form, space, and value. With each exercise, build your skills to complete a final composition of a still life in graphite pencil. Each class session will include instruction, demonstration, presentations of master drawings, and teacher led studio time. Course #DRW106.221.01

What you will need for the course:

  • Small sketchbook, 5.5” x 8.5”
  • Strathmore 300 Series Drawing Pad, 9” x 12” (glue bound)
  • Set of 6 Staedtler Lumograph Drawing Pencils
  • Kneaded Eraser Tortillion (medium blending stump)

Drawing for Beginners - Online

Join artist Kevin Hunter for this comprehensive introduction to drawing.

Taught online through instructional videos and live Zoom sessions, you'll develop your skills through exercises and projects using graphite and charcoal to create realistic drawings. Instruction covers line, shape, shadow, perspective, and other key elements of drawing. Course#  DRW100.221.02

The course includes an instructional video each week. Also included is a weekly group Zoom session with the instructor for guidance, helpful critique, and/or questions about your work.

What you will need for the course:

  • A minimum 9”x12” drawing pad
  • One #2 pencil
  • One General’s charcoal pencil (soft)
  • One or two kneaded erasers
