Adobe Illustrator - Private Instruction

Whether you're a novice, need help with a special project, or wish to sharpen your skill with Illustrator you can learn how to create original vector illustrations. Instruction will cover object drawing tools, colors, layers, templates, pathfinder, the oh-so-difficult pen tool, and more! Instruction will follow a lesson plan, or can be customized to your needs. 

Fee includes three hours of instruction (typically split it into two, 1.5 hr. sessions) - times to be arranged directly with the instructor. Students must provide their own laptop and software  https://www.adobe.com/creativecloud/plans.html

For an introduction to digital design consider combining any two private instruction topics.

Your instructor, Lisa Youngdahl, is a graphic designer with over 30 years of experience and a Resident Artist at Water Street Studios. 

She is the owner of Resolution Creative and has 15 years of experience teaching digital/graphic design at the College of DuPage, Waubonsee Community College, and Elgin Community College. She is currently an instructor at Elmhurst University.

Mixed Media Drawing for Kids (Ages 9-12) (North Classroom)

Calendar May 31, 2022 at 3 pm, runs for 5 weeks

While using a variety of mediums and materials, students will explore different drawing and sketching techniques. Cameron will hold a step-by-step tutorial to demonstrate the selected technique of the month, then students can expand on those techniques using mediums and materials such as; graphite, colored pencil, charcoal, oil pastel, pen, marker, photographs, construction paper, water color etc.

  • What you will need to get:
  • HB pencil
  • 2B pencil
  • 4B pencil
  • kneaded or white eraser
  • pencil sharpener
  • colored pencils
  • 11' X14' sketchbook or larger

Supplies are available through many online outlets including Dick Blick, Amazon, and Michael’s.

Sketchbook for Kids(ages 13 - 16) (South Classrooms)

Making Mini Comics (for ages 11-16)(North Classroom)

Learn to draw Comics with WSS art instructor Matt Fitzpatrick! 

This class introduces students to creating and drawing their own black and white comics. 

Students will be instructed on creating their own unique black and white mini comic from start to finish, while learning the steps and techniques in the process!

Discovering Abstract Art (North Classroom)

Join WSS instructor, Chris Beaty will demonstrate drawing and painting intuitively and review the work of several abstract painters designed to help you understand the core concepts behind non-representational painting (painting without recognizable images).

During the 6 week course, you’ll be encouraged to work quickly and to try new things as a way to experience creative breakthroughs. You'll work on numerous (up to 20) small sketches and three or four paintings. No experience necessary.

This course is designed for anyone age 16 and above who:

  • Wants to explore nonrepresentational painting.
  • Wants to strengthen and develop their own voice as a painter.
  • Is interested in taking risks with their painting.
  • Wants to have more confidence in their own way of painting

Fashion Design and Illustration for Teens (Ages 13 - 18)(North Classroom)

Students will learn how to draw their own fashion illustrations and design their very own collection! Juliana will give step-by-step instructions on how to draw a proportional basic fashion figure. She will then help her students develop their own figures - whose unique style, body types, and poses fit their own design aesthetics.They will then learn how to render different fabrics and silhouettes, drawing from other designers' work and their own creations.

Week 1: Draw a croquis/basic fashion body

Week 2: Developing unique figures; including faces, hair, proportions, and poses

Week 3: Rendering different prints and textiles

Week 4: How fabric lays on the body, drawing a real runway design

Week 5: Designing your own outfits          

 What students will need to bring to first class:

  • Eraser
  • 2B Pencil
  • Artist marker set (ex: copic, blick studio, prisma color)
  • Multimedia sketchbook 11' X14' or larger
  • 05 Micron Pen
