Introduction to Oil Painting

Learn and build upon the fundamental skills you need to express yourself in the oil paint medium in this new introductory class with instructor Christine Rider.

Learn how to prepare your painting surface and begin to understand the steps for developing an oil painting. Topics will include layering processes, brushwork, palette knife use, and color mixing.  An overview of the elements and principals of design will help to give a foundation to the development of your compositions. Sessions include demos, discussion, presentations of other artists’ paintings, and individual guidance by the instructor. Course #PNT105

Supply list for the course will be emailed upon registration.

Note: Designed for students age 16 and above – no experience necessary. Students should expect to dedicate time between sessions for practice. For safety, enrollment is limited and masks are required.

Ceramics: Beginner and Intermediate

Learn how to create wheel thrown ceramics in this comprehensive seven-week course designed for both beginner and intermediate clay artists.

The basics of handling clay are introduced with several hand building techniques. Moving to the wheel, you’ll create cylinders/cups/plates and bowl forms with attachments, such as handles for mugs and spouts for pitchers.

Toward the end of the course, different glazing demonstrations will be introduced to design the work created. Intermediate students will be given more advanced options for learning upper level techniques. Course# CER100.221.10

Note: Designed for ages 16 and above. Glazes and kiln firings are included in the course. During the duration of the class, students may sign up to use the studio for practice during our open gallery hours.    

For saftey we limit enrollment and require that masks be worn.         

Drawing with Colored Pencil on Black Paper - Online

Explore the beauty of drawing with colored pencil on black paper in this online course for beginners and experienced artists alike. Learn everything you need to get started - paper, pencils, how to put the color down, how to draw without seeing lines, layering, and blending.

This live Zoom course meets for 90 minutes, 3-4:30 p.m. for four (4) weeks, March 2-23. A recording of each session will be available for you to view if you are unable to attend a live session. Reference images will be supplied. It is expected that students will be able to dedicate time between the sessions. Course# DRW107.221.01

What you will need: 

  • 48ct Prismacolor softcore pencils
  • 9"x12" Strathmore Black Artagain Paper Pad
  • White Graphite Paper (white carbon paper)
  • Pencil sharpener (electric or manual)
  • Helpful extras….. Smooth surface to draw on, drawing board, 1" or 2"clean soft paint brush (to use as a drafting brush)

Supplies can be purchased at Dick Blick or other online/reatil outlets. Links for Zoom sessions are sent through email by the instructor prior to the course start date. 

Introduction to Oil Painting

Learn to paint with oils in this seven-week class with Aimee Maher BFA! While the focus will be on developing your own unique style and creativity, the course also covers basic terms, materials, and techniques. Learn concepts such as color theory, perspective, spatial relationships, and composition.

You will also study still life in various painting styles and art movements in the historical context. Demonstrations as well as group and individual critiques are provided throughout the course. Course#PNT105.221.02

What you will need:

Paint: titanium white, ultramarine blue, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, cadmium yellow.

Misc. Supplies: #1/ #3/ #5 round brushes, #4 filbert brush, and 3/8” flat brush; linseed oil; bar of ivory soap and plastic soap container, plastic palette or case with lid, diamond shaped palette knife, old kitchen towel (approx. 12” x 18”), clean baby food jar and lid.

Drawing for Beginners - Online

Join artist Kevin Hunter for this comprehensive introduction to drawing.

Taught online through instructional videos and live Zoom sessions, you'll develop your skills through exercises and projects using graphite and charcoal to create realistic drawings. Instruction covers line, shape, shadow, perspective, and other key elements of drawing. Course#  DRW100.221.02

The course includes an instructional video each week. Also included is a weekly group Zoom session with the instructor for guidance, helpful critique, and/or questions about your work.

What you will need for the course:

  • A minimum 9”x12” drawing pad
  • One #2 pencil
  • One General’s charcoal pencil (soft)
  • One or two kneaded erasers

Supplies are available through many online outlets including Dick Blick, Amazon, or Michael’s.

The course runs March 9 - April 20 (date of final Zoom session). Zoom sessions are every Tuesday at 7 p.m. beginning March 16. Links to access instructional videos and Zoom sessions are sent through email prior to the course start date.

Beginning Borosilicate Glass Marble Workshop

Learn the flameworking technique of marble making using borosilicate glass rods. You’ll learn how to gather glass and shape it in a marble mold - creating a beautiful shiny orb. With the help of your instructor, you’ll practice making a single-color transparent marble and a frit/stringer decorated marble. Course# GLS104.221.02

Note: Marbles will be available for pick up approx. 48 hours after they are annealed in the kiln. Fee includes all supplies. For safety, enrollment is limited and masks are redquired.

 

Watercolor Painting for Beginners - Online

  • Three Blick Master Stroke Golden Taklon Watercolor Brushes: (1) one inch flat (Blick item #09017-1001), (2) No. 10 round (Blick item #09015-1010), (3) Script Liner Size 2 (Blick item #09014-1002)
