STEAM @ Water Street classes for kids age 8-10 focus on integrating science, technology, engineering, and math with art. During this two-session course, kids will learn about the microscopic realm of organisms, atoms, and molecules and the types of microscopes used to reveal this hidden world. In the second session, kids will create a mixed media painting inspired by microscopic images. This section meets at Water Street Studios, T/Th, Feb. 16 & 18, 4:30-6:30 p.m. 

STEAM @ Water Street classes, a $75/student value, have been generously funded by a grant from the Dunham Fund. 

Note: All supplies provided. For safety, and in accordance with Phase 4 requirements, this workshop is limited to five (5) participants. We follow social distancing and mask guidelines. 

Famous Art and Artists - Folk Art (age 11-13)

Discover Gelli Printing w/Distressed Oxide Ink

Explore a variety of monoprint Gel plate printing techniques using Tim Holtz’s Distress Oxide Inks. Flexible and easy to use, Gelli plates look and feel like gelatin, and are ideal for mixed media projects. Distress Oxide Ink is a dye and pigment ink fusion that creates an oxidized effect when sprayed with water. Together they can be used to create many one-of-a-kind, layered, ethereal papers perfect for making cards, tags, backgrounds for collages, etc.

All materials are provided. No experience necessary, just the desire to experiment, learn, and have fun! Designed for age 16 and above. For safety, enrollment is limited and masks are required.

Making Glass Swizzle Sticks

Adorn drinks with your very own handmade set of sparkling swizzle sticks. This “no experience necessary” workshop makes for a fun, creative experience or an easy introduction to the art of glass flameworking. Learn to make simple shapes and designs out of molten glass using a torch and then attach those designs to pre-made glass swizzle stick bases. Course# GLS101.221.01

Note: For ages 16 and above. All tools and materials provided. Your set of 6 swizzle sticks will be available within 48 hours for pick up. Please wear closed toe shoes, natural fiber clothing (no shorts), and secure long hair away from face.

Portrait Drawing Workshop

Many artists stress about drawing the human face. Perhaps you do too? Relieve some of that stress as you experiment and become confident drawing portraits in this new four-session workshop designed for students with some drawing experience. 

Working from photographs with graphite and charcoal, use the “sight-size method” to create a realistic, classical portrait. Learn how to plan out a successful portrait drawing and troubleshoot common errors.

Demos, handouts, and critiques guide your learning as you complete a self-portrait (or a portrait of a loved one) on toned paper to take home. You’re encouraged to enhance your work by adding meaningful elements to your portrait, such as an object that is important to you (or your subject). Course#DRW103.221.01

What you will need for the workshop:

  1. Nitram Charcoal sticks, HB & H (5-pack)
  2. 1 HB pencil
  3. 1 General’s White Charcoal pencil
  4. 1 Kneaded eraser
  5. 1 Sandpaper block for sharpening charcoal
  6. 1 small lidded container for the charcoal powder
  7. 2 sheets of Canson Mi-Tienes drawing paper, 8.5” x 11" (available in stores as a single sheets) in the color STEEL GREY. If you cannot find this size in store, the bigger sheet can be cut to size.
  8. A sketchbook of your choice.

Supplies are available through many online and retail outlets including Dick Blick, Amazon, or Michael’s, and should cost approx. $30.

Note: Designed for students age 16 and above with some drawing experience. Students should expect to dedicate time between sessions for practice exercises.
