Advanced Oil Pastels (North Classroom)

with Joseph Giunta

Calendar Sep 12, 2024 at 2 pm, runs for 3 weeks

Take the next step to learning all about the colorful beautiful world of drawing with oil pastels, in this guided 3 week class that meets two hours a week with experienced art instructor, Joe Guinta.

Oil pastels produce the look and feel of oil paint without the mess. They’re creamy sticks of color that blend easily and produce vibrant paintings you will love. If you took the Introduction to Oil Pastel class, this course could push your skills to a higher level. If you have experience with other mediums, this course could open a new world of creative possibilities.

This 3-session class will provide you with a brief overview of techniques followed by painting subjects that include landscapes, people, and animals from your own reference materials.

Students will learn:

  • oil pastels techniques
  • how to layer and blend
  • how to create depth tone and color
  • tips for painting still-life, people and animals
  • and how to use oil pastel for their own artistic creations!

Students will leave class with completed projects and the skills to continue creating using beautiful oil pastels!

Oil Pastel is a relatively modern medium. The current version was created in 1949 at the request of Henri Goetz on behalf of his friend Pablo Picasso. Goetz asked art materials manufacturer Henri Sennelier to develop a stick that allowed artists to paint freely without technical restraints on any surface. The result was an oil-based stick of paint. Picasso adopted the medium and artists have been using it ever since. If you are new to painting, oil pastels is a fun introduction to it!

Art Materials are included in this class, including use of house oil pastels, paper, and drawing tools.  Students are welcome to bring their own materials.

*Class can be repeated to refine and build skills.
