Saturday Social Still-life Open Studio & Paint Session (for 16+) South Classroom

This Saturday Social Still Life Class will be themed on drawing and painting Autumn Leaves!

Practice your drawing and painting skills in the Water Street Studio Classrooms!  Join us for a relaxing afternoon of sketching and painting and meeting other artists at Water Street Studios.


Bring a friend and make some new ones.  This is open studio time for practicing drawing and painting in the WSS studio space, it is non instructional.

We provide: * An interesting still life set up * Studio Space to be creative * Basic drawing supplies * Drawing paper * Photo references * Table easel's*  Coffee & cookies!*

Bring your own favorite art supplies as needed.

This non-instructional, 2-hour session will allow you to explore artmaking  alone or with a group of art friends! 


A Look into the Spooky, Macabre and Supernatural (Teens 16 - 19) (North Classroom)

This Halloween class will delve into the history of horror, the supernatural,  unexplained mysteries and death in art. Students will learn about the history of macabre, grotesque, and the supernatural and be inspired by the Halloween season to create  their own spine tingling works of art.

What you will need to bring to class on first day:

  • Vine Charcoal & Thick Charcoal pastels(2 sticks each)
  • #2 pencils (2) (WSS can provide or bring your own)
  • Gum Eraser & Regular erasers(WSS can provide or bring your own)
  • Pencil Sharpener (WSS can provide or bring your own)
  • Sketch pad 11" X 14" or larger for charcoal drawing

* Supplies are readily available from stores such as Amazon, Dick Blick and Michaels. 

Drawing and Creating Using Artistic Pattern Making Techniques (South Classroom 16+)

Learn to enhance your drawings, paintings, and creative projects with unique pattern making techniques in this three week class!

Students will explore pattern drawing as an enhancement tool for drawings, paintings and 3 - D artist projects. Drawing patterns is both soothing and relaxing.  The intention of this course is to inspire you to continue pattern-drawing long after you leave the classroom.  This type of artwork can be done with ease and simplicity or complexity and add sophistication to your artistic creations. Students will learn 6 pattern making techniques and work on pattern making projects and the creation of art journal.

*Projects will include: bookmark making, art journal making, tagua nut pendant necklace pattern and creation, watercolor painting with pattern overlay designs, single line pattern making. Materials included in registration.

This class will meet Tuesday's and Thursday's for 3 weeks.

 This is a fun entry level class for 16+


Introduction to Charcoal Drawing (Teens 14 - 19 )(North Classroom)

Students will be introduced to different types of charcoal drawing techniques, including the concept of value, light, proportion, and composition. Students will then create unique still life drawings using their observation skills and charcoal drawing techniques to create unique final artistic compositions. 

What you need to get:

  • Vine charcoal sticks
  • Graphite pencil
  • Gum eraser(WSS can provide or bring your own)
  • Regular rubber eraser(WSS can provide or bring your own)
  • #2 pencil(WSS can provide or bring your own)
  • Compressed charcoal pencil
  • Charcoal Drawing pad 9 X 12 or larger

This is a five-week class for beginners.

Artistic Field Journal Class for adults 16+ (North Classroom)

Scientists use field journals to record what they find, observe, & collect. They often include sketches...observations, and questions." What if we kept a field journal for our own "backyards" to help us pay attention to ourselves and the world around us? In this class we will use sketching tips, writing exercises, and field work to create a reflective, memorable work of art in our field journals.

We will utilize basic drawing & writing exercises when we meet and continue with daily assignments. In the end, we will have created a reflective, memorable work of art in our sketchbook journals.

Color Pencil Techniques on Black (South Classroom)

Join WSS resident artist Lisa Youngdahl explore color pencil on black! This may be your introduction to colored pencil or, if you have already used colored pencil, there are different techniques to learn for drawing on black. The vivid color against black adds “extra punch” to your drawing! 

Students will learn both basic colored pencil techniques and adapting these techniques to work on black board. The vivid color against a black board will add extra drama to your artwork! Starting with an underlaying drawing, the blending of layers of color will give a painterly quality to the drawings. Students will learn about additional tools that will help achieve the desired effects to their drawing. We will start with a tutorial lesson, then students will work on their own drawings with the guidance of the instructor. Students should bring references and ideas for drawings they would like to create. Students will need to provide their own set of 24 color Prismacolor Premier Pencils. These are available at local art supply stores and Amazon.

*If a repeat session is offered, it could be ongoing for students to continue their projects.

  • Canson Black Drawing Board, 16”x20” - cut into four 8”x10” boards 
  • 9”x12” tracing paper pad
  • 2H pencil

  • Prisma color pencil sharpener (recommended)
  • Kneaded eraser

Art Sampler Series: Create your own holiday gifts (for 16+) (North Classroom)

Tis the season to create your own creative beautiful homemade holiday gifts!

In this Art Sampler students will explore creating and making their own unique holiday gifts! Leave the store-bought holiday behind and have a creative homemade holiday season this year with Water Street Studios!

Explore a different medium with each 2-hr class while creating beautiful personal gifts to give! Seasonal theme projects will be explored such as snow scenes, poinsettias, holly, reindeer and more....

Class #1. Acrylic Painting on small canvas

Class #2. Watercolor Painting & colored ink

Class #3. Scratchboard Drawing on black 

Class #4. Oil Based pens / sharpies on ceramic plates

Class #5. Colored pencil on slate tiles

This is class is perfect for adults with some art experience helpful, but beginners encouraged to attend!

This class meets Tuesday nights, no class Thanksgiving week Nov 22nd.

 * Materials included in registration, be prepared to bring yourself and have some fun!


Intermediate Colored Pencil for 14+ - Online Course

The class is designed for those with some experience with color pencil. An excellent opportunity to expand your skills with the color pencil. Each student will work on a rendering of their choice with input from the instructor. Each session will be a review of what each student is working on and assisting where needed. The remainder of the time will be a demo on a different technique/subject matter with the color pencil.

This live Zoom course meets for 90 minutes on Tuesdays, 6:30 to 8pm for 6 weeks.

It is expected that the student will be able to dedicate time between the sessions.

**Reference images can be supplied

NOTE: These are the same supplies as the beginner class.

  • 48ct Prismacolor softcore pencils
  • 1 9x12 300 series Strathmore Smooth Bristol Pad
  • 1 Blick colorless blending pen
  • Pencil sharpener (electric or manual)


Helpful extras…..

Smooth surface to draw on, drawing board

1 or 2 inch clean soft paint brush (to use as a drafting brush)


About the instructor Phil Schorn

Phil has been a color pencil artist for many years and has been teaching the art for the last four years.

His art has been published is various publications; Daily Herald, Chicago Tribune, Featured Artist in Color Pencil Magazine and Featured Artist in Ann Kullberg’s Color Pencil Magazine. He also has 2 books on Amazon of his art. Phil exhibits in several outdoor art festivals thru the summer and fall. His art can be seen at
