Getting Started with Colored Pencil - Online Course

Explore the beauty of drawing with colored pencils in this online course for beginners. Learn everything you need to get started - types of paper, pencils, how to put the color down, layering, and blending. Each session will include a review and demonstration of new techniques. Course#DRW102.121.01

This live Zoom course meets for 90 minutes, 6-8:30 p.m. for four (4) weeks, Sept. 7 - 28. A recording of each session will be available for you to view if you are unable to attend a live session. Reference images will be supplied. Ages 16 and above.

It is expected that the student will be able to dedicate time between the sessions.  

What you will need:

  • 48 count Prismacolor softcore pencils
  • One (1) 9”x12”  300 series Strathmore Smooth Bristol Pad
  • One Blick colorless blending pen
  • Pencil sharpener (electric or manual)

Helpful extras….. Smooth surface to draw on, drawing board 1” or 2” clean, soft paintbrush (for use as a drafting brush)

Drawing for Beginners - Online

Join artist Kevin Hunter for this comprehensive introduction to drawing.

Taught online through instructional videos and live Zoom sessions, you'll develop your skills through exercises and projects using graphite and charcoal to create realistic drawings. Instruction covers line, shape, shadow, perspective, and other key elements of drawing. Course#  DRW100.121.01

The course includes an instructional video each week. Also included are group Zoom session with the instructor for guidance, helpful critique, and/or questions about your work.

What you will need for the course:

  • A minimum 9”x12” drawing pad
  • One #2 pencil
  • One General’s charcoal pencil (soft)
  • One or two kneaded erasers

Supplies are available through many online outlets including Dick Blick, Amazon, or Michael’s.

The course runs Sept. 7-Oct. 19, 2021. Instructional videos become available to students beginning Sept. 7. Group Zoom sessions are every Tuesday 7-8 p.m. and begin Sept. 14. The final Zoom session is Oct. 19. Links to access instructional videos and Zoom sessions are emailed by the instructor prior to the course start date.

Intermediate Color Pencil Drawing

An excellent opportunity to expand your skills, this new online course with Phillp Schorn is designed for those with some experience with color pencil. You'll work on a rendering of your choice with input from the instructor. Each session will include a review of your work and assistance when needed. The remainder of the time will be a demo on a different technique and/or subject matter. Course#DRW111.121.01

  • 48ct Prismacolor softcore pencils

Cartooning and Illustration for Young Artists (age 12-16)

Learn how to draw cartoons and make illustrations in this fun course for young artists ages 12-16. Use the techniques you learn to create your own illustrations and cartoon characters. Learn the differences between cartooning and illustration, and how both can easily go hand in hand.

No matter what kind of cartoons you like - this class will help give you the tools you need to start making your own illustrations and cartoon characters. What will be covered:

  • The basics of cartooning and what sets it apart from other art forms.
  • How to sketch simple forms and shapes that will help you get the ideas in your head down on the paper.
  • Good working practices such as how to sketch, ink, and color a drawing from start to finish.
  • Materials and methods: Taking a detailed look at all the different pens, markers, tools, and methods that you can use.

What you will need for the course:

  • Two Pigma Micron Fineline Pens, .03 and .08 
  • Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen - black
  • Staedler Mars white plastic eraser
  • One HB or H pencil
  • 9” x 12” sketchbook

Drawing for Young Artists (age 12-16)

Being able to draw well is the basis of any art form.This class will introduce young artists to the elements and principles of drawing, while encouraging individual creativity. Introduction to Pen and Ink Drawing

Accomplished illustrator Kelley Cappell leads this beginner level course on pen and ink line drawing. Begin with basic technique exercises including shading and line variation with different size pens. Then, apply what you’ve learned by working on a drawing of your choice. By the end of the course, you will have a finished pen and ink drawing to take home.

Designed for ages 16 and above. Course #DRW101.121.01. Drawing experience is helpful, but not necessary to benefit from this course.

What you will need for the course:

  • Set of 10 (assorted size) black micron pens 11”x14”
  • A mixed media, marker, or pen & ink pad. Must mention suitability for ink.

 

Drawing with Colored Pencil on Black

Add some drama to your artwork with resident srtist Lisa Youngdahl! This may be your introduction to colored pencil or, if you have already used colored pencil, there are different techniques to learn for drawing on black. The vivid color against black adds “extra punch” to your drawing. The instructor will provide a tutorial image and help you get started with your own Course# DRW107.121.01
