Portrait Drawing Workshop
with Tina Figarelli
Become confident drawing portraits in this popular four-session workshop designed for students with some drawing experience.
Working from photographs with graphite and charcoal, use the “sight-size method” to create a realistic, classical portrait. Learn how to plan out a successful portrait drawing and how to avoid common errors.
Demos, handouts, and critiques guide your learning as you complete a self-portrait (or a portrait of a loved one) on toned paper to take home. You’re encouraged to enhance your work by adding meaningful elements to your portrait, such as an object that is important to you (or your subject). Course#DRW103.321.01
What you will need for the workshop:
- Nitram Charcoal sticks, HB & H (5-pack)
- 1 HB pencil
- 1 General’s White Charcoal pencil
- 1 Kneaded eraser
- 1 Sandpaper block for sharpening charcoal
- 1 small lidded container for the charcoal powder
- 2 sheets of Canson Mi-Tienes drawing paper, 8.5” x 11" (available in stores as a single sheets) in the color STEEL GREY. If you cannot find this size in store, the bigger sheet can be cut to size.
- A sketchbook of your choice.
Supplies are available through many online and retail outlets including Dick Blick, Amazon, or Michael’s.
Note: Designed for students age 16 and above with some drawing experience. Students should expect to dedicate time between sessions for practice exercises. For safety, masks are required until further notice.
Drawing for Beginners - Online

Join artist Kevin Hunter for this comprehensive introduction to drawing.
Taught online through instructional videos and live Zoom sessions, you'll develop your skills through exercises and projects using graphite and charcoal to create realistic drawings. Instruction covers line, shape, shadow, perspective, and other key elements of drawing. Course# DRW100.321.01
The course includes an instructional video each week. Also included are group Zoom session with the instructor for guidance, helpful critique, and/or questions about your work.
What you will need for the course:
- A minimum 9”x12” drawing pad
- One #2 pencil
- One General’s charcoal pencil (soft)
- One or two kneaded erasers

The course runs June 8 - July 20. Instructional videos become available beginning June 8. Group Zoom sessions are every Tuesday at 7 p.m. beginning June 15. Final Zoom session is July 20. Discover Abstract Art

Think, draw, and paint abstractly in this six-session course taught by Christopher Beaty. Explore a variety of techniques with an emphasis on finding what works for you as an artist. Chris will demonstrate drawing and painting intuitively and review the work of several abstract painters designed to help you understand the core concepts behind non-representational painting (painting without recognizable images).
During the course, you’ll be encouraged to work quickly and to try new things as a way to experience breakthroughs. You'll work on numerous (up to 20) small sketches and three or four paintings.
No experience necessary. This course is designed for anyone age 16 and above who:
- Wants to explore non-representational painting.
- Wants to strengthen and develop their own voice as a painter.
- Is interested in taking risks with their painting.
- Wants to have more confidence in their own way of painting.

Pan Pastel and Colored Pencil Workshop
with Phillip Schorn
This special half-day workshop with artist Phillip Schorn is an excellent opportunity to expand your skill with colored pencil and to experiment with integrating pan pastels into your work. Pan pastels are pastel colors that can be mixed and applied like paint. They are packaged in a unique pan “cake” format and combine beautifully with colored pencil.
During the initial part of the workshop, Phillip will demonstrate various color pencil techniques. Then, you’ll progress to working with pan pastels and colored pencil in combination. You’ll work on a couple of different renderings during the workshop.
