After School Famous Artist Inspired Collage Workshop Series for Children(Ages 4-11)(South Classroom)

$120

with Carly Palmer

Calendar Aug 17, 2022 at 4 pm, runs for 4 weeks

Join WSS this August for back to school and back to creativity classes! Join this creative collage workshop that develops both creativity and introduces art history to students!

Come join School of Art Instructor Carly Palmer for a unique creative collage workshop four (4) part series for children that pairs art making, art history, and literacy! In each 2 hour workshop, children will be invited to explore their own unique imaginations and curiosity through process art. Process Art is art that is child-directed, choice-driven, and celebrates the experience of discovery. In process art, the final product is always unique and the focus lies in the creation of the work, not the outcome. This workshop is geared towards 1st-4th Grade aged children.

Week One: We will be creating paper collages inspired by Henri Matisse’s work. At the beginning of the workshop, we will be reading the book “Henri’s Scissors” to introduce students to the theme & art project.

Week Two: We will be creating paper collages inspired by the artistic movement Surrealism (and artists such as Rene Magritte & Salvador Dali) and encouraging students to let their imaginations run wild! At the beginning of the workshop, we will be reading the book “Remarkable Animals” to introduce students to the theme & art project.

Week Three: We will be creating tissue paper collages collages inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s floral paintings. At the beginning of the workshop, we will be reading the book “Plants Can’t Still” to introduce students to the theme & art project.

Week Four: We will be creating paper self-portrait collages inspired by Pablo Picasso’s work. At the beginning of the workshop, we will be reading the book “We’re All Works of Art” to introduce students to the theme & art project.

*Special Note: Process art is developmentally appropriate for young children because it meets them where they are as sensory explorers. Children will be using glue sticks, safety scissors, and washi tape to put together their collages. All materials will be provided and students will be able to choose & experiment with a variety of materials. The workshop is adaptable to each child’s individual needs.

“Let Art Speak To You” – Word + Image Art Workshop Series

$120

with Carly Palmer

Calendar Oct 4, 2022 at 6:30 pm, runs for 3 weeks

This NEW three (3) part workshop series will introduce students to the concept of bringing together visual art alongside written word. The focus on this workshop will be on weaving together word + image to tell a new story. Inviting in words that capture thoughts and feelings adds a whole new dynamic to the art making experience. Likewise it offers the art the chance to “speak” in more ways than one. Students will be guided each week with art & writings prompts to deepen their creative process.

Week One: Ekphrastic Poetry

Students will be invited to write their own ekphrasis poetry inspired by well-known artworks. Ekphrastic poetry has come to be defined as poems written about works of art; however, in ancient Greece, the term ekphrasis was applied to the skill of describing a thing with vivid detail. In addition to the descriptions of a work of art, an ekphrastic poem usually includes an exploration of how the speaker is impacted by their experience with the work.

Week Two: Poetry Collage

Students will be invited to create their own poems from their cut out words. Students can work intentionally by piecing together their words and/or they can add in an element of surprise and randomness by putting their poem together by chance. Both methods will be discussed, and students will be encouraged to explore which method they are most interested in experimenting with.

Week Three: Fairytale & Mythology Collage

Students will be invited to create collages inspired by reading well-known fairytales and/or mythology. They will select symbols, themes, and/or words create their own visual stories inspired by the stories.
