Getting Started with Colored Pencil - Online Course

Calendar Feb 2, 2021 at 3 pm, runs for 4 weeks

Explore the beauty of drawing with colored pencils in this online course for beginners. Learn everything you need to get started - types of paper, pencils, how to put the color down, layering, and blending. Each session will include a review and demonstration of new techniques. This live Zoom course meets for 90 minutes, 3-4:30 p.m. for four (4) weeks, Feb. 2- 23. A recording of each session will be available for you to view if you are unable to attend a live session. Reference images will be supplied.

It is expected that the student will be able to dedicate time between the sessions.  

What you will need:

  • 48 count Prismacolor softcore pencils
  • One (1) 9”x12”  300 series Strathmore Smooth Bristol Pad
  • One Blick colorless blending pen
  • Pencil sharpener (electric or manual)

Helpful extras….. Smooth surface to draw on, drawing board 1” or 2” clean, soft paintbrush (for use as a drafting brush)

Make a Unique Tagua Nut Pendant

Create a beautiful Zentangle inspired Tagua Nut 1.5” pendant in this fun Artistic Friday workshop. The eco-friendly Tagua Nut, commonly known as "vegetable ivory", earned its name from its ivory-like color and texture. You will use Micron pens and Moonlight Gelly Roll Pens to give depth and dimension to your design. The nuts are pre-drilled and sealed for protection.

Your pendant will be enhanced with an intricate twisted wire hanger you will make as well as a leather cord for hanging. All materials are provided. No experience necessary. Course# CFT111.221.01

Calendar Feb 6, 2021 at 9 am, runs for 2 weeks

STEAM @ Water Street classes for kids age 8-10 focus on integrating science, technology, engineering, and math with art. During this two-session course, kids will learn about the microscopic realm of organisms, atoms, and molecules and the types of microscopes used to reveal this hidden world. In the second session, kids will create a mixed media painting inspired by microscopic images. This section meets at Water Street Studios, Sat. Feb. 6 & 13, 9-11 a.m.

STEAM @ Water Street classes, a $75/student value, have been generously funded by a grant from the Dunham Fund. THIS CLASS IS IN- PERSON AND IS HELD AT WATER STREET STUDIOS.

Note: All supplies provided. For safety, and in accordance with Phase 4 requirements, this workshop is limited to five (5) participants. We follow social distancing and mask guidelines. Masks provided or bring your own.

Drawing for Young Artists (age 12-16)

Calendar Feb 6, 2021 at 1 pm, runs for 5 weeks

Being able to draw is the basis of any art form. In this new class, young artists will explore their abilities and learn how to plan, compose, and draw a completed still life. Choose to either work from life or from a photograph. Using charcoal pencil on toned paper, focus on developing your fundamental skills while creating a successful piece with full value and correct perspective. Your final piece is sure to be a frame-worthy work of art. Course#  DRW104.221.01

What you will need for this course:

  • One Nitram Charcoal starter kit (sandpaper block, H stick, HB stick, B stick)
  • One kneaded eraser
  • One HB pencil
  • One sketchbook (minimum 9”x12”)

Full Course

Drawing for Young Artists (age 12-16) - Online

In this new online course, the fundamentals of classical drawing will be introduced using still-life, nature, and other subjects. Young artists will discover methods to connect direct observation with skills to render imagery on paper and core studio concepts will give you the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of art and design with projects that develop and strengthen both traditional and experimental art techniques. Supply list will be emailed upon registration. Supplies are available through many online and retail outlets including Dick Blick, Amazon, or Michael’s.

Video demonstrations of techniques will be provided each week followed by Zoom sessions at the indicated time with the instructor for guidance while you paint. Necessary links and other information will be sent prior to course start date.

Acrylic Painting for Beginners

Calendar Feb 8, 2021 at 6:30 pm, runs for 6 weeks

This six-week course led by artist Kelley Cappell will introduce you to the beauty of acrylic painting while you create several finished compositions. A focus on simple subject matter such as florals, landscapes, and still life ensures that you can confidently learn and practice basic acrylic techniques. No previous art experience is required. Note: Designed for ages 14 and above. All supplies are provided. 9"x12" canvases will be provided. Students may bring in larger canvases if desired.
