Simple Glass Pendant Workshop

Calendar Oct 21, 2020 at 6 pm, runs for 1 week

Glass sparkles and shines like no other material. With your instructor’s guidance, learn to melt borosilicate glass using a propane/oxygen torch and create colorful glass pendants. Flamework experience is helpful but not necessary. Course# GLS102.120.02

Note: For ages 16 and above. Please wear natural fiber clothing, closed toe shoes and pull long hair away from face. Pieces will be available for pickup in 48 hours.

For safety, and in accordance with Phase 4 requirements, this workshop is limited to three (3) participants. We follow mask guidelines. Masks provided or bring your own.

Handcraft a Personal Notebook

Learn a variety of bookbinding techniques and create four unique notebooks using beautiful mixed media and handmade papers. Notebooks can be used for journaling, recipes, sketching – or anything you like. Use the papers you created in the Mixed Media Paper Designs workshop or any of the sheets provided in class. Course# CFT101.120.01

Beginning Borosilicate Glass Marble Workshop

Learn the flameworking technique of marble making using borosilicate glass rods. You’ll learn how to gather glass and shape it in a marble mold - creating a beautiful shiny orb. With the help of your instructor, you’ll practice making a single-color transparent marble and a frit/stringer decorated marble. Course# GLS104.120.02 

Note: Marbles will be available for pick up approx. 48 hours after they are annealed in the kiln. Fee includes all supplies.

Portrait Drawing Workshop

Many artists stress about drawing the human face. Perhaps you do too? Relieve some of that stress as you experiment and become confident drawing portraits in this new four-session workshop designed for intermediate students.

Working from photographs with graphite and charcoal, use the “sight-size method” to create a realistic, classical portrait. Learn how to plan out a successful portrait drawing and troubleshoot common errors.

Demos, handouts, and critiques guide your learning as you complete a self-portrait (or a portrait of a loved one) on toned paper to take home. You’re encouraged to enhance your work by adding meaningful elements to your portrait, such as an object that is important to you (or your subject). Course#DRW103.120.01

What you will need for the workshop:

  1. Nitram Charcoal sticks, HB & H (5-pack)
  2. 1 HB pencil
  3. 1 General’s White Charcoal pencil
  4. 1 Kneaded eraser
  5. 1 Sandpaper block for sharpening charcoal
  6. 1 small lidded container for the charcoal powder
  7. 2 sheets of Canson Mi-Tienes drawing paper, 8.5” x 11" (available in stores as a single sheets) in the color STEEL GREY. If you cannot find this size in store, the bigger sheet can be cut to size.
  8. A sketchbook of your choice.

Supplies are available through many online and retail outlets including Dick Blick, Amazon, or Michael’s, and should cost approx. $30.

Note: Designed for students age 15 and above with some drawing experience. Students should expect to dedicate time between sessions for practice exercises.

STEAM @ Water Street (ages 8-10)

STEAM @ Water Street classes for kids age 8-10 focus on integrating science, technology, engineering, and math with art. During this two-session course, kids will learn about the microscopic realm of organisms, atoms, and molecules and the types of microscopes used to reveal this hidden world. In the second session, kids will create a mixed media painting inspired by microscopic images. This section meets T/Th Oct. 27 & 29, 4:30-6:30 p.m.

STEAM @ Water Street classes, a $75/student value, have been generously funded by a grant from the Dunham Fund. Classes are held at Water Street Studios and online.

Getting Started with Colored Pencil - Online Course

Explore the beauty of drawing with colored pencils in this online course for beginners. Learn everything you need to get started - types of paper, pencils, how to put the color down, layering, and blending. Each session will include a review and demonstration of new techniques. Course#DRW102.120.02

This live Zoom course meets for one hour on Monday evenings, 7-8 p.m. for four (4) weeks, November 2, 9, 16, and 30 (no class Nov. 23). A recording of each session will be available for you to view if you are unable to attend a live session. Reference images will be supplied.

It is expected that the student will be able to dedicate time between the sessions.  

What you will need:

  • 48 count Prismacolor softcore pencils
  • One (1) 9”x12”  300 series Strathmore Smooth Bristol Pad
  • One Blick colorless blending pen
  • Pencil sharpener (electric or manual)

Helpful extras….. Smooth surface to draw on, drawing board 1” or 2” clean, soft paintbrush (for use as a drafting brush)
